Every year, we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2 to send across the message of peace and non-violence. His father, Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi (1822–1885), served as the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar state. Putlibai gave birth to her last child, Mohandas, in a dark, windowless ground-floor room of the Gandhi family residence.

A lawyer whose life changed through his experiences in South Africa, Gandhi played the most significant role in India’s independence movement. He did it by holding demonstrations through non-violent means.

Dandi March

Mahatma Gandhi opposed the salt law introduced by British rule by conducting the Dandi March.
Under this salt law, Britishers made restrictions for Indians from producing or selling salt. British not only exercised monopoly over the manufacture of salt but also imposed a heavy salt tax.

On March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi embarked a historic Salt March. It was from Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad to the village of Dandi. It was in the state’s coastal area to protest against the steep tax the British levied on salt.
