Steal Like an Artist by Austin kleon Summary

The  author Austin Kleon explains the key to unlimited creativity in the novel Steal like an artist. According to him no work is good or bad. It’s rather worth stealing or not worth stealing.

The greatest artist of 20^th century, Pablo Picasso quoted a line as

Good artists copy, great artists steal.

A line is being said since years that there is nothing new under the sun. There is nothing 100% original in one’s idea. People might have a doubt if everything is already there then what is that one unique thing, he/she can contribute to the society as a new idea.

Austin has given the idea that there is no need of having a pressure on oneself to contribute a perfectly fresh creativity to the society because no work can be new. The author explains this amazingly by sighting a theory of Gene ology of ideas.

An individual inhibits his/her parent’s genes. Similarly ideas are also being inherited. Like in a family tree some qualities have been devised into the children and some are the addition qualities one has. In the same way some ideas have been inherited from the forefathers.

In addition to those ideas one acquires more ideas through different fields for example by the music on listens, by the books one reads etc. The combination then becomes a new idea.

This is the way how an idea could be created by the process of stealing.

One must not follow plagiarism but only copy. It’s just taking some of the ideas to create a whole new dish. The author says

Copying from one source is plagiarism but copying from different sources is research.

One must follow his/her ideals to get a perfectly new idea.

One’s goal is to understand ones ideals thinking and give it a unique twist to produce a new idea. Like the late Kobe Bryant said all his moves were not new. He stole his ideals’ moves and modified those moves which became his own moves. This led him to success as one of the best basketball players.

Another thing has been sighted by Austin that Side projects and hobbies are really important. Hobbies must be something which does not give pressure. It must be like something that would give peace to the soul and not for showing off. This boosts ones self-esteem plus provides a new perspective that would enhance the creativity.

Creativity is something one must want to create and it comes from different ideas to become a single and a strong one. Keep researching and be a creative person.
