In the year 1881, a student replied with a yes of a question asked by the teacher whether the universe is the creation of the god. The teacher asked another question whether evils or ghosts are the creation of god or not. To this the student did not answer and took permission to ask a question to the teacher.
Student: Does cold exist?
Student: You are incorrect. Cold does not exist. It is only the absence of heat.
Likewise, darkness doesn’t exist. Darkness is only felt when there is no light. It is the absence of light.
It enlightens the fact that evil and cruelty don’t have its own form.
This happens to exist only because of the absence of love, trust and disbelief to god.
The very student is none other than Swami Vivekananda
He is the one who took a major step in revival of Hinduism in India. He introduced Hinduism at the parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893. In the initiation of the speech he spoke “Sisters and Brothers of America”. After listening to this, 6000 intellectuals from the audience applauded continuously up to 2 minutes. This was the very first impact on the Americans that left them think about the practices of Hinduism and about the religion. It is written in the book THE BIOGRAPHY OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA.
His real name is Narendranath Datta. It later changed to Vivekananda given by his Guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. He learnt from his guru that service to god can be rendered through service to human kind.
If money help a man to do good to others, it is of some value; but if not, it is simply a mass of evil, and the sooner it is got rid of, the better.
He was born in a Bengali family in Kolkata. His birthday 12th January is celebrated as National Youth Day. Vivekananda inclines towards spirituality.
Since childhood Vivekananda is a bright child. He used to listen to the stories of Mahabharata, Upanishads, Ramayana, Vedanta, and Bhagavad Gita from his mother.
In the year 1879, he was the first student to score first division (60% or above) in the entrance exam of Presidency College.
In the year 1897, Vivekananda started a mission named Ramakrishna Mission. It promoted that every religion in the world is the truth. Every religion is a path to a single body which is the truth to the society. There should not be any discrimination among the various religions. Equality is vital in the teaching of Swami Vivekananda.
All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.
On 4th July 1910, Swami passed away at the age of 39. Before his death, he travelled all over India barefooted. If he would have wanted he could have cozily lived in any city in Europe or America and died living a luxurious life. He quoted
“May He who is the Brahman of the Hindus, the Ahura-Mazda of the Zoroastrians, the Buddha of the Buddhists, the Jehovah of the Jews, and the Father in Heaven of the Christians give strength to you to carry out your noble idea.”
